Urgent Need for Enhanced Workplace Violence Prevention Measures

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published new statistics on workplace violence for 2022/23. The data, taken from the Crime Survey England and Wales, highlights the pressing need for improved safety measures and underscores the importance of protecting employees from violent acts while at work.

Key Statistics from 2022/23:

  • 649,000 Incidents of violence at work in 2022/23.
  • Incidents included 360,000 threats and 288,000 assaults.
  • 41% of these incidents resulted in injury, while 59% had no injury. Injuries ranged from minor bruising and black eyes to severe bruising, cuts, stab wounds, concussions, and other serious injuries.
  • An estimated 62% of workplace violence offenders were strangers to the victim. Among 38% of incidents where the offender was known, they were most often a client or member of the public known through work.
  • Respondents in protective service occupations faced the highest risk of assaults and threats at 8.6%, which is six times the average risk of 1.4% across all occupations. Health and social care associate professionals also faced a higher-than-average risk at 4.4%.
  • Offenders were reported to be under the influence of alcohol in 49% of threats and 30% of assaults at work. Drug influence was noted in 35% of threats and 24% of assaults.
  • Annually, around 44,000 workers in Great Britain sustained non-fatal injuries because of physical violence at work, making up about 8% of all workplace non-fatal injuries.
